Join artist Jade Montserrat for an open conversation unpacking some of the wider themes emerging from the development of her recent project ‘Rainbow Tribe: Affectionate Movement’.
‘Rainbow Tribe: Affectionate Movement’ is a collaborative research and performance project related to Josephine Baker’s pivotal 20th-century experiment ‘The Rainbow Tribe’ in which a group of 12 ethnically-diverse children were adopted by Baker.
Jade is particularly interested in discussing her ongoing research into the notion of Affectionate Movement, ecologies of care, critique of institutions and structural oppression and the demands placed on bodies within and outside the performance space.
This Conversation is open to artists, scholars, writers and others who are interested in ideas of cultural identity, the burden of representation and the centering of care as an imperative within decolonial practice.

Artist Bio
Jade Montserrat is a visual artist (performance, works on paper and interdisciplinary projects. As a postcolonial subject working from a small North Yorkshire town, Montserrat’s work provides a unique basis for political self positioning within Black Diasporic Cultural discourse. Montserrat makes work that draws from a fractured and erased biography; perpetually attempting to define place in community, through an identity imposed, shaped by experiences of cultural violence, nationalistic chauvinism, racism and xenophobia, insertion and rejection.
